Our ABCs of American Sign Language: "ASL Access, Breaking Barriers & Building Communication Connections"

Through the use of ASL and ASL signs we help you bridge the  communication gap between you and your staff, clients, co-workers, family, the elderly, those with disabilities, communication barriers and more.

What is American Sign Language? (ASL)

American Sign Language (ASL) is a complete, complex language that employs signs made by moving the hands combined with facial expressions and postures of the body. It is the primary language of many North Americans who are deaf and is one of several communication options used by people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.

We are proud to offer conferences and workshops just as we have here in London through the Thames Valley District School Board. These workshops are designed to give child care providers, educators, and homeschooling parents the tools to incorporate American Sign Language (ASL) into the current curriculum. As educators, we know that there are different types of learning styles in the classroom; auditory, visual and kinesthetic. Workshop content and length are customized to the needs of each facility and staff. Participants will learn hundreds of signs along with simple, memorable ways to integrate sign language into each day. Using sign language in your program encompasses all learning styles. The students will hear you when you say the word, he/she will see you make the sign and will also experience/feel the word as he/she learns to sign. These workshops are designed to suit the specific needs of the school. Teachers will learn about the research supporting the use of sign language in the classroom, they will be given resources and will be provided with vocabulary specific to classroom use.

Using Sign Language with seniors has been proven to:

1.  Reduce frustration and self-injuring.
2. Decreases depression
3. Signing can help with range of motion for arms and hands.
4. Keeps the mind active/stimulates the brain
5. Increase memory retention
6. Increase overall well-being
7. Dignity

Signing with seniors does not only have to be for those in need but it is also a great tool for socializing and boosting self-esteem overall.
In addition, this is an incredible communication tool and language to use for the seniors’ health care providers and families.  When signing with seniors it often isn’t about learning American Sign Language (ASL) in its entirety but about learning enough ASL signs (IE: hungry, bathroom, tired etc) to allow them to tell you what they want, when they want it and take the guess work out of things, thereby allowing one to maintain their dignity, self-respect and self-confidence, and in turn allowing you to communicate with them more freely while reducing frustration.

About our ASL Classes, Workshops and 1 on 1 Sessions

In our ASL classes, workshops, and 1 on 1 sessions we use the Signing Naturally curriculum that was originally developed at a California College.  With this curriculum you not only learn ASL but also valuable information to educate you on the Deaf culture and this will allow you to have a better comprehension of the Deaf culture and community.

Our qualified Deaf instructors have a “no-voice” teaching method.  This format of teaching affords you to the opportunity to increase your awareness when signing.  Incorporating this method of teaching with videotext, your workbook, games and more, plays an important role in aiding your ability to retain the information learned in an enjoyable interactive manner.  Additionally we offer various levels of ASL classes to suit your needs as well as for you to continue your knowledge of ASL and learn from the beginning level through to a level of conversational skills one would use in daily conversations.

NOTE:  Our programs are not certificate programs, however we are happy to provide you with a letter of completion at your request.

Our classes are designed for those 16 yrs of age and older.  Children 15 years of age may enroll with an adult that is also registered.
